20kg, 40kg or 56kg? Choosing the Right GeoWeight for Your Borehole

All three standard GeoWeights share an 80mm diameter, so the real choice is about length, total weight and handling. Here’s how to pick — and when to combine them.

We keep the range simple on purpose. There are three standard GeoWeights, and every one has the same 80mm (3.14″) diameter. So the choice isn’t about fit — it’s about how much weight the borehole needs, how you’ll handle it on site, and how you want to order.

The three sizes at a glance

  • 20kg (44lbs)648mm (2′1.2″) × 80mm
    50 per pallet · 1,200 per 20ft container
  • 40kg (88lbs)1148mm (3′7.6″) × 80mm
    25 per pallet · 600 per 20ft container
  • 56kg (123lbs)1558mm (5′1.1″) × 80mm
    17 per pallet · 432 per 20ft container

When the 20kg makes sense

The 20kg is the shortest and most manageable unit, and it’s the building block of the range.

  • Shallower boreholes and lighter fluids, where the loop needs a modest amount of added weight.
  • Topping up. Add a 20kg to a 40kg or 56kg to fine-tune the total without overshooting.
  • Tight sites where a shorter unit is simply easier to position at the wellhead.

When the 40kg makes sense

The 40kg is the all-rounder: double the weight of a 20kg, at just over a metre long.

  • Mid-depth boreholes where a single 20kg won’t overcome the upthrust.
  • Standardising a fleet. Many crews prefer to stock one main size and top up — the 40kg is a sensible default.
  • Combinations. 40 + 20 = 60kg; 40 + 40 = 80kg.

When the 56kg makes sense

The 56kg is the heaviest standard unit, and the most weight in a single piece.

  • Deeper boreholes, denser fluids and larger-diameter loops, where upthrust is higher.
  • Fewer connections. One 56kg gives you close to a 40kg-plus-20kg combination in a single unit, with no shackle in between.
  • Heavy combinations. 56 + 56 = 112kg; 56 + 40 = 96kg.

Combining units

Target weightCombinationApprox. length
60kg40 + 201.8m
76kg56 + 202.2m
80kg40 + 402.3m
96kg56 + 402.7m
112kg56 + 563.1m

Lengths are the units end to end, before shackles.

Because units shackle together with standard hardware, you can build up to almost any total from the three sizes. Use suitably rated shackles and check each connection before lowering — and remember combined weights get long, so plan the lift at the wellhead.

When to go custom

If none of the standard sizes (or combinations) suits your project — an unusual loop, a very deep borehole, a length restriction at the wellhead — we can make custom lengths and weights to order.
